Introduction
As we have done in recent years, we’re going to spend some time between Christmas and Easter looking at the person of Jesus as he’s presented to us in the Gospels. In Lent, we’ll follow the lectionary readings from Luke’s Gospel, but first we’re visiting John’s Gospel for a few weeks.
John’s gospel tells the story of Jesus in a very different way to the other gospels, being built around seven signs (miracles done by Jesus to show who he is), seven sayings (claims made by Jesus about himself that start with ‘I AM’, referencing the divine name from Exodus 3:14) and seven witnesses who testify to who Jesus is. The whole book is about him and is written so we may believe and have eternal life (John 20:30-31).
This short preaching series aims to shine a light on who Jesus is by looking at a handful of the different perspectives in which John presents him to us early in his Gospel, helping us to build towards a picture of how God wants us to know him.
